What is a Deaf Interpreter?

A Deaf Interpreter (more correctly known as a Sign Language Interpreter) translates words into sign language in order to communicate with people who are deaf and hard of hearing. In the UK, Deaf Interpreters work in BSL, or British Sign Language, though there are many variations of this throughout the world including ISL or International Sign Language.

An experienced BSL interpreter is the key to effective communication and a Deaf Interpreter must possess all the necessary skills in performing the correct interpretations at all times. British Sign Language or BSL, the language used by a Deaf Interpreter, is a language in its own and includes hand movements, facial expressions as well as body language. It is a very full bodied and detailed way of expressing yourself.

The services of a Deaf Interpreter will be used for many occasions, from a wedding to a job interview, a doctor or optometrist session or ante-natal classes to business consultations and so on.
