* Conventionally, using the word ‘Deaf’ (with a capital ‘D’) refers to a person whose preferred language is BSL whereas ‘deaf’ (with a lowercase ‘d’) refers to any person with a significant hearing loss.
BSL was recognised as a language in its own right by the UK government on 18th March 2003. In fact, it is an official minority language in the UK and now has a similar status to that of other minority national languages such as Welsh and Gaelic.
BSL, like any other language, has its own vocabulary, grammar and expressions.
