Maria Wallin - General Manager, Prestige Network

Prestige Network has appointed Maria Wallin as General Manager.

Maria, who speaks four languages (Swedish, English, German and Spanish), joined language services company Prestige Network in 2007 as PA to CEO Shohreh Fleming, working her way up to Administration/HR Manager before being appointed General Manager from 1 June (2009).

She said: “I was looking for a career change and seeking an industry where I could be exposed to a multi-cultural working environment and that’s way I was attracted to work for Prestige Network. I enjoy challenges and stepping outside of my comfort zone – I thrive on that – that’s what’s different about me. I adapt very quickly to new countries and new environments.

Maria, 35, was born in Seoul, Korea and has lived in six countries. She started her international ‘jet-setting’ life at the tender age of three months when she moved to Sweden to be with her adoptive parents. During her years growing up, she also lived in Saudi Arabia and Spain (Marbella) – her father’s job as a civil engineer took the family around the world. At age 19, Maria left home to move to Switzerland to do a BA in Business Management.

Her career started in Jersey, where she worked her way up from receptionist to General Manager in a variety of hotels, but the travelling bug caught up with her and she left to take a year out on a world tour, travelling around all of the continents.

Last year, Maria led Prestige Network’s management team to be awarded an Internationally recognised ISO 9001 certification by BM Trada, an accredited certification body, for its comprehensive Quality Management System which incorporates all aspects of its operation.

She said: “When Prestige Network was awarded ISO 9001 certificate, this was my biggest achievement here. The ISO 9001 confirms that every single procedure of Prestige Network’s operations, from linguist recruitment to appropriate invoicing, is quality checked – thus ensuring a professional service to all of our customers and suppliers. We are one of the few companies in the industry to achieve this.”

British Sign Language (BSL) / English Interpreting

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Clients may commonly refer to a BSL linguist as a sign language interpreter, but the more accurate term is a British Sign Language (BSL) / English Interpreter, i.e. an interpreter who works in both BSL and English who can assist in communication between Deaf and hearing people.

At Prestige Network, we understand the crucial role that a sign language interpreter plays in bridging the communication barrier between Deaf* and hearing people.

*The use of the word ‘Deaf’ (with a capital ‘D’) refers to a person whose preferred language is BSL whereas ‘deaf’ (with a lowercase ‘d’) refers to any person with a significant hearing loss.

British Sign Language is the first or preferred language of around 70,000 people in the UK and was recognised by the UK government as a minority language in March 2003. With the services of a sign language interpreter, proficient in both BSL and English, Deaf and hearing people can communicate with each other.

Our British Sign Language (BSL) / English Interpreters,  have the essential skills and expertise to provide sign language translation that conveys the words, the meaning and feelings behind the words, which are so often vital when interacting. The friendly and efficient service provided by our experienced and bilingual staff and having access to a database of over 5000 language and BSL/English Interpreters will ensure that you get an experienced interpreter who can address your specific needs whether you are an individual or an organisation in the commercial, public or private sector.

Police Language Needs

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

policewomanbackPrestige Network has established very strong links with many Police Forces around the UK by providing them with the first class translation services. Our Police language and interpreting team have been able to assist the non-English speaking public when reporting a crime, attending at a police station front desk, during police interviews and dealing with general queries about the police service.

Our professional linguists support the Police through face-to-face and telephone interpreting and document translations. Furthermore, Prestige Network’s Police Translation team provide their services at legal assignments and court hearings on daily basis throughout the whole country – for example see our article Prestige Network Solves Cheshire Constabulary’s Language Headache.

Every linguist we use is CRB verified and is bound by a strict code of conduct. Many are on the National Register and are DPSI qualified. They are experienced in Police practice and procedures raging from arrest and detention to statement taking and interpreting recorded interviews.

We work closely with Police Forces, as well as the Legal Profession (solicitors, courts, fraud, etc.) in general, and we understand their specific needs. And by ensuring that our linguists receive job-specific briefs, we can ensure that the we meet the language needs of the UKs Police Forces.
